Fennec fox. Fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) lying on sand. This small fox has thick fur on the soles of its feet to enable it to walk on sand in its desert environment. It is mainly nocturnal, resting in burrows during the day to avoid heat stress. Its distinctive large, triangular ears act as a cooling mechanism as well as helping it to hunt. The fennec feeds on insects, lizards, rodents, birds and plants. It can go without water for extended periods. It is found in groups of 10- 15. Fennecs are found mainly in the Sahara Desert. Photographed in north Africa.
