Lion. Male lion (Panthera leo) drinking from a pool of water. Males are distinguished by the large dark manes around their necks. Lions are carnivorous big cats which inhabit the savanna and scrub of southern and eastern Africa, and parts of southern Asia. They are the only truly social cat, living in large groups (prides) of about 20 individuals, including two or three males, several females and their young. Hunting in a pride is usually done by groups of lionesses. The whole pride feeds from a kill, and food is even saved for weak or sick pride members. Their prey typically consists of large herbivores such as zebra. Photographed in the Kalahari desert.
