Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) standing on the branch of a tree. This elegant carnivore has an extremely streamlined body, with long legs and a concave back. It hunts small gazelles and other ungulates (hoofed mammals), spotting potential victims from a raised observation point, as seen here. The cheetah gets as close as possible to its prey and then breaks into a very fast sprint. It is the fastest living land mammal, reaching speeds of over 110 kilometres per hour. A. jubatus is found in savanna and lightly- forested areas of Africa south of the Sahara and in Arabia from Iran to Kazakhstan.
