Male lion (Panthera leo) snarling. The lion is a social carnivore, living in prides of related females and their offspring which the dominant male or males must defend from invaders trying to breed. The females do most of the hunting, the male forcibly taking a share of the food after a kill has been made. P. leo is found in savannah and scrubland in sub-Saharan Africa and in scattered areas of India. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in South Africa and Botswana.
