Female lion (Panthera leo) drinking from a pool. Lions are social cats that live in groups (prides) comprising several females, adolescents and young and one or two males. Females (lionesses) perform most of a pride's hunting, which occurs both at night and by day. They hunt co-operatively, with several females encircling the prey before making the kill. Prey includes antelopes, zebra and smaller mammals. Lions are found throughout sub- Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which lies in both Botswana and South Africa.
