Mountain lion (Puma concolor) silhouetted by the Sun. The mountain lion is also known as the puma, panther or cougar. It is a predatory carnivore that is found in South and Central America, and the western parts of North America. It lives in a variety of habitats. Each individual has a large territory in which it hunts mammals such as deer. It hunts both by day and at night. It can climb trees, and also stalks and ambushes its prey. When not breeding, it is a solitary animal. It can reach lengths of over 2 metres, and weights of over 100 kilograms.
