Jaguar (Panthera onca). This cat is the largest in its range. It is found in the jungles of Central America and northern South America. It is a good swimmer, spending time in the water to cool down and to hunt aquatic prey such as turtle, fish and alligators. It also hunts forest pigs and deer. It is a solitary, secretive animal, rarely seen. It is endangered by hunting for its hide, and by loss of its habitat. The jaguar can reach a body length of over 2 metres.
