Harp seal. Harp seal pup (Phoca groenlandica) on ice. The pup is covered with dense fur to protect it from the cold ice on which it is lying. As it matures it loses this fur and develops a thick layer of fat (blubber) which insulates it in the icy waters. This seal lives on and around the ice packs of the Arctic. It eats mainly fish, shellfish and other sea creatures. Photographed in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada.
