Manatees. Female West Indian manatee or sea cow (Trichechus manatus) and calves. Usually one calf is born after a gestation of around a year. The younger calf is seen at lower left, with its older sibling at upper right. West Indian manatees live in rivers, estuaries and coastal waters around the Caribbean Sea. They are entirely herbivorous, eating a wide variety of water plants in both fresh and saltwater. They are large animals, weighing up to 500 kilograms and eating over 30 kilograms of plant matter each day. Photographed in Crystal River, Florida, USA.
