Caption

Group of manatees. West Indian manatees or sea cows (Trichechus manatus). Manatees are aquatic mammals: this species inhabits rivers, estuaries and coastal waters throughout the Caribbean and feeds on plants in salt and freshwater. Although usually solitary, a strong bond develops between mating adults and between a mother and her calf. Manatees were mistaken for humans by early explorers, giving rise to tales of mythical mermaids and mermen. Photographed in Crystal River, Florida, USA.
