Manatee swimming. West Indian manatee or sea cow (Trichechus manatus) swimming. The manatee is an aquatic mammal and can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes without having to surface for air. Manatees are herbivorous and consume up to 30 kilograms of vegetation per day. Usually solitary, this species occurs throughout the Caribbean, inhabiting rivers, estuaries and coastal waters.
