West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) swimming in a river. This aquatic mammal inhabits rivers, estuaries and shallow coastal waters around the Caribbean Sea. It is herbivorous, feeding on sea grass and other vegetation. It is a gregarious animal, living in extended family groups. Its numbers have been reduced drastically by human encroachment, habitat destruction and hunting. Photographed in the Crystal River, Florida, USA.
