African elephant (Loxodonta africana) eating grass. The African elephant is the largest and heaviest land animal alive today, often weighing over 7000 kilograms. It is herbivorous, eating over 120 kilograms of grass, bark and leaves every day. It lives in large social groups throughout central and eastern Africa, in habitats ranging from forest to savanna.
