African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in captivity drinking from a pot. African elephants drink daily, sucking up water with their trunks and then squirting it into their mouths (far right). These social herbivores inhabit the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa, living in family herds ruled by an elderly matriarch. They are the largest land animal, adult males reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight.
