Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) underwater. The hippo is a large water-loving herbivore that lives in and around rivers throughout southern and eastern Africa. It spends the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night it leaves the water to eat fruits and grasses. The hippo lives in groups of around 15 individuals, although larger groups have been seen. It is an aggressive animal with little fear of humans. Fights between rival hippos are sometimes fatal. An adult hippo may reach over five metres in length, and can weigh up to 4500 kilograms.
