Pampas deer. Ozotocerus bezoarticus. These medium-sized deer live in grassland in certain areas of South America. Within Argentina, habitat loss and the decline in deer numbers has become critical. The most endangered subspecies of pampas deer, O.b. celer, is only found within Argentina. Adult males have triple pointed antlers which are shed each winter. These deer were among the animals seen by Charles Darwin during his voyage on the Beagle. The engraving was taken from a book published in 1894.
