Red deer. Red deer (Cervus elaphus) silhouetted against a sunset. These animals are also known as wapitis or Rocky Mountain elk. Red deer are found throughout the world in northern temperate regions, from mountain plains to low-lying woodland. Rocky Mountain elk are the largest form of red deer.
