Red deer male, or stag (Cervus elaphus). This stag is "in velvet", meaning its antlers are still growing, and are covered in a soft velvety layer of hair. Stags spend most of the year in a single sex herd with other bachelors. During the breeding season in the autumn, stags compete with each other for dominance of the breeding grounds, with dominant stags attracting more females (hinds). The red deer is found throughout much of the northern Northern Hemisphere, and is known as the elk and wapiti in other parts of its range. In the UK it is the largest native land animal, and a male can stand nearly two metres tall. Photographed on Exmoor, Somerset, UK.
