Bison or buffalo (Bison bison) walking in snow. This is the largest terrestrial mammal in North America. Bison live in herds, with females and young forming small bands and the mature males forming their own groups. They feed mainly on grass, but will forage for other vegetation when this is scarce. Once widespread from Alaska to northern Mexico, the bison population was decimated when the white settlers arrived in North America. Bison are now listed as endangered and are found in the wild only in the Yellowstone National Park, USA and the Wood Buffalo Park, Canada.
