Bison herd. These grazing bison (Bison bison) are the largest terrestrial mammal in North America, and locally known as the buffalo. They live in herds, with females and young forming small bands and the mature males forming their own groups. Their diet mainly comprises grass. In winter, some herds dig for grass in the snow, while others move south to warmer climates. In the summer, herds may merge. The males are larger than the females, sometimes weighing over 1000 kilograms. Photographed in the Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA.
