Caption

Musk ox (Ovibos moschatus). This large herbivore lives in herds on the Arctic tundra, from Canada to Greenland. Its thick coat, composed of a long, coarse outer layer lying over a short, fine under- hair, protects it from the harsh winter conditions that prevail over its range. The long horns are present in both sexes and are used in dominance disputes between males and in defence against predators such as the Arctic wolf. When the group is threatened, the adults form a compact circle around the calves, facing outwards. Musk oxen feed on a wide variety of plants, including grasses and sedges. Photographed in North East Greenland National Park, Greenland.
