Mermaids with dolphins. These mythical creatures, half-woman and half-fish, were first described by the Syrians, who worshipped a Semitic mermaid moon-goddess called Atargatis. Over time, the mythology of mermaids changed from that of godlike beings to supernatural creatures that could lure ships onto rocks and men to their deaths using their bewitching voices. Today it is thought that alleged sightings of mermaids may actually have been of dolphins or seals.
