Human fertilisation. Computer artwork of the female reproductive system, showing fertilisation. An ovum (egg) is released (ovulation) by one of the ovaries (yellowish, upper left and right) and passes into the fallopian tube, where it is penetrated by a sperm (blue, upper left) and the parental chromosomes mix. The fertilised egg cell then divides into a zygote and continues to increase in cell number to form a blastocyst and then an embryo as it passes towards the uterus. It enters the uterus and implants in the uterine lining where it will develop into a foetus.
