Supernova, 3D simulation. Supercomputer model of a supernova simulation showing the lopsided blast waves of gas resulting from the explosion. Supernovae occur when a massive star has run out of nuclear fuel and its core collapses to form a neutron star. The collapsed core triggers a shock wave that powers the supernova explosion. This model was created using data from the Terascale Supernova Initiative.
