Publius (or Gaius) Cornelius Tacitus (56-117AD), Roman senator and historian. Tacitus studied rhetoric in Rome in preparation for a career in law and politics. He was an acclaimed public speaker and rose quickly through public office. He is best known for two of his five surviving books, "Annals" and "Histories", which charted the reigns of the four Roman Emperors that succeeded Caesar Augustus and the Year of Four Emperors respectively.
