Kurdish general and sultan. Sultan Saladin, who led Islamic opposition to the European armies during the Crusades. Egypt and Aleppo on behalf of his brother. Saladin's death, in 1193, lead to a succession dispute between his sons that eventually saw al-Adil emerge as Sultan. He fell ill and died during the Fifth Crusade.
