Slave soldier. Artwork of a Mamluk, a slave soldier. Mamluks were often bought as young non-Muslim boy and brought up as Sunni Muslim soldiers. As the Mamluk armies became larger they also became more politically powerful, with some Mamluks attaining the rank of Sultan.
