Intestinal capillariasis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic nematode (roundworm) Capillaria philippinensis, the cause of intestinal capillariasis. The parasite has freshwater fish as its intermediates host and fish-eating birds as the definitive host. Humans can become infected by eating raw or undercooked fish. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea and oedema. It is often fatal.
