African sleeping sickness life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of Trypanosome parasitic protozoa, the cause of African sleeping sickness, also known as African trypanosomiasis. It is transmitted by the bite of infected tsetse flies. Initial infection causes fever, joint pain and itching. Once the parasite has crossed into the central nervous system it causes confusion, disturbance of the sleep cycle and reduced coordination. Without treatment African sleeping sickness is fatal.
