Gagarin and Leonov during training. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, 1934-1968) congratulating fellow cosmonaut and test pilot Alexei Leonov (right, born 1934) after a training flight aboard a helicopter. Gagarin had become the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight he became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. He later returned to active service as a test pilot, dying in a crash during a training flight in 1968. Leonov is famous for carrying out the world's first space walk on 18 March 1965, during the Voskhod 2 mission. Photographed in Russia, on 21 October 1965.
