Russian soldiers. Red Army soldiers marching through the streets of liberated Gzhatsk, in Russia's Smolensk Region, during the Second World War. The Eastern Front of WWII was known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). In 1968 Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin, in honour of Yuri Gagarin (the first man in space) who was born there.
