Coronary angioplasty surgery. Surgeon disinfecting a patient's skin prior to performing an angioplasty on their coronary artery. Angioplasty is used to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. A balloon catheter is inserted into the narrowed area and inflated to force the vessel open. It is then deflated and retracted back out of the body. Here the catheter will be fed up into the coronary artery through a blood vessel in the patient's groin.
