Black hole research. Spacecraft (lower centre and upper left) monitoring interstellar material that is being drawn into a black hole (upper right). The colours around the black hole are due to its accretion disc, consisting of matter that has been drawn into orbit around it and which heats up and emits radiation before it passes over the event horizon into the non-visible region (black). This region is where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
