Coronary angioplasty surgery. Surgeon injecting a patient with local anaesthetic prior to performing an angioplasty on their coronary artery. Angioplasty is used to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. A balloon catheter is inserted into the narrowed area and inflated to force the vessel open. It is then deflated and retracted back out of the body. Here the balloon catheter will be used to place and expand a stent (wire mesh tube) at the narrowed area of the artery. Once expanded the stent will be left in place to hold the artery open.
