Angiographic X-ray examination of the chest and neck blood vessels of a 38-year-old patient. A contrast medium is injected into the aorta, the main artery leading from the heart, which shows blood flow through the carotid and subclavian arteries, which supply blood to the head and arms respectively. Angiography is a diagnostic procedure in which a contrast medium opaque to X-rays is injected into the bloodstream to allow blood vessels to be studied on an X-ray.
