Protein research laboratory. Protein (yellow) separating within a chromatography column (centre). Chromatography is used to separate out several components of a liquid mixture. It is especially useful for separating out components with similar physical properties. The sample to be analysed is placed within the column and the different components of the mixture travel down the column at different rates. The technique can be used to purify and isolate a required product.
