Mitochondrion. Cutaway artwork showing the internal structure of a mitochondrion. This structure, found in eukaryotic cells, is the site of energy production. There are two membranes: an outer membrane (peeled back here) and an inner membrane that forms folds (cristae). Cristae are the sites of aerobic cell respiration, where sugars and fats are oxidised (magnified view at upper right), which releases energy. Structures shown here include ribosomes (brown), granules (yellow), a DNA loop (red), and ATP synthase (orange). ATP synthase is the enzyme that is critical for energy production, producing ATP from ADP.
