Caption

Sviatoslav Fyodorov (1927-1000), Soviet Ukrainian eye microsurgeon. Fyodorov was appointed head of the Moscow Research Institute of Eye Microsurgery, Russia, in 1980. In 1960 he performed the Soviet Union's first intraocular lens replacement surgery and during the early 1970s, developed a reliable technique for treating short-sightedness (myopia). Known as radial keratotomy, it used small incisions made in the cornea that cause it to contract as it heals, bringing vision into focus. Photographed in 1993.
