Soyuz 31 crew. Soviet cosmonaut Valery Fyodorovich Bykovsky (born 1934, right) and German cosmonaut Sigmund Jahn (born 1937, left) speaking to a reporter immediately after their Soyuz 31 space-flight (launched 26th August 1978) returned to Earth. Bykovsky spent 5 days in space aboard the Vostok 5 spacecraft from 14-19 June 1963, orbiting the Earth 82 times. This remains the space endurance record for a solo flight. He was also commander of the Soyuz 22 (1976) and Soyuz 31 space flights. Jahn's flight onboard Soyuz 31 was part of the Soviet Union's Intercosmos program, and made him the first German in space. Photographed on 2nd November 1978, in Kazakhstan.
