Alzheimer's disease test. Elderly man completing a multiple choice test during a test for Alzheimer's disease. This is a condition in which there is a gradual loss of memory, along with personality changes and confusion. It is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. It results from atrophy (wasting) of the brain. Some drugs can slow its progress, but there is no cure, and death occurs after years of decline.
