Saturated solution. A red saturated solution in a test tube. Undissolved solute (a precipitate) has collected in the bottom of the tube. A saturated solution contains the maximum equilibrium amount of solute at a given temperature. Equilibrium occurs when the rate at which solute particles leave the solution is exactly balanced by the rate at which they dissolve.
