Sodium + chlorine. The metal sodium reacts with the halogen gas chlorine in a conical flask. This is an extremely vigorous reaction as both sodium and chlorine are highly reactive compounds. The product of the reaction is sodium chloride, better known as common salt: 2Na + Cl2 ----> 2NaCl.
