Colon polyps. Endoscope view of the transverse colon (part of the large intestine) showing inflammatory polyps in a patient with ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is inflammation of the bowel, typically arising in the rectum and often extending to involve part of, or most of, the large intestine. Polyps are a common complication of colitis as they develop as a regenerative response to the inflammation and ulceration of the mucosa. Treatment may require removal of all or part of the colon (colectomy).
