Keyhole kidney removal surgery. Close-up of surgeons using minimally invasive keyhole surgery tools during an operation to remove a cancerous kidney. This is laparoscopy, where the tools are inserted into the patient's body through small incisions (keyhole ports) in the abdomen. This is less traumatic than opening up the abdomen. Here, one of the ports is being enlarged to allow the kidney and its tumour to be removed. When, as here, the kidney's ureter is removed as well, the operation is called a nephroureterectomy. Parts of the operation were carried out with robotic assistance.
