Excised cancerous kidney. The kidney is the dark red tissue, surrounded here by blood-soaked peri-renal fat. The kidney's ureter was also removed, making the operation a nephroureterectomy. The kidney was removed using minimally invasive keyhole surgery techniques. The method used was laparoscopy, where the tools were inserted into the patient's body through small incisions (keyhole ports) in the abdomen. The kidney was removed through one of these incisions. This is less traumatic than opening up the abdomen. Unlike an ordinary laparoscopic operation, earlier parts of this operation used robotic assistance.
