Photographic fixer reaction. First of two images showing photographic fixer, sodium thiosulphate or thio, dissolving silver bromide, which is widely used in photographic film. The silver bromide is a cloudy solid suspended in solution in a test tube. The thio will be introduced through a hollow rod (from top centre to lower centre). Silver bromide is used in photography because it is sensitive to light, its crystals form specks of solid silver when exposed. This process is then enhanced by a photographic developer. Thio is then used to dissolve off any unexposed silver bromide to leave a permanent negative of the original image. A500/226).
