On the Origin of Species, Japanese edition. Volumes of the first edition of the first Japanese translation (1914) of the work 'On the Origin of Species' (1859) by the British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882). Detailing his theory of evolution by natural selection, this is Darwin's most famous work. It was translated into 11 European languages in his lifetime, and has been translated into at least 18 further languages since his death. Here, the book has been published as a pocket-size edition in five volumes. The folded out page shows a speciation tree diagram.
