Dehydrated sucrose. Steam rising from household sugar (sucrose) that has been chemically dehydrated. When concentrated sulphuric acid is added to sucrose at room temperature, water molecules are removed from the sucrose molecule, leaving copious amounts of atomic carbon. The carbon rapidly blackens the reagents, which are themselves colourless.
