Melanite, a black variety of andradite, of the garnet group of minerals. Chemical formula Ca3Fe2Si3O12. In melanite part of the iron is replaced by titanium. It is isometric, the crystals having a dark metallic gloss. From Zillerthal, Austria. Width 50mm.
