Kidney stones. Frontal intravenous urogram (IVU) X-ray of the abdominal region of a person with kidney stones in the left kidney. IVU images are produced by injecting the patient with an iodine-based radio-opaque contrast medium prior to X-ray. The contrast is removed from the bloodstream via the kidneys, and enters the urinary system, where it becomes visible on x-rays almost immediately after injection.
